what to see

Gurendes is situated on uneven yet unencumbered land on the banks of the river Omecillo. The ‘trunk road’ for communication in the Valdegovía district passes right through it. This village reaches a maximum height of 580 metres above sea level .

The village is considered as being split into three distinct upper, middle and lower zones from both the chronological and structural points of view. The lower zone is the most modern and has been built around the local road .

The middle zone may be regarded as the functional centre of the village, as it contains the most significant buildings in respect of architectural and cultural interest as well as community services .

Architectural heritage

•Parish church

The patron saint of the parish church is San Miguel, or St. Michael. The church is rectangular in shape with two blocks added to its south side; one housing the open porch and the other, larger, holding the vestry and chapel. One interesting feature is the tower that emerges from the chapel structure with a belfry topped by a modern lantern

The tower-house is rectangular, with front and back facing north and south respectively. Although the tower has been hacked about, it still keeps certain features that bear witness to its original military function. The curved forms at its four corners and its double curved modillions are two hallmarks of its medieval past.

•Trio of basic services

- Fountain
- Wash-house
- Drinking-trough

The rustic fountain, backing onto its wall, has a water trough and upper body from which a spout and two overflows emerge. The two drinking troughs, one on each side of the fountain, are flush with ground level.
